Happy Beach Day

So Tuesday was my birthday. Thirty-four. One year removed from half way to olddd. No offense to any of you seventy year olds out there. Well we went out to celebrate at one of my favorite restaurants on Saturday… Ukai. It’s a hibachi place. Delicious. The...

Tenley’s First Detroit Tigers Game

Last Friday we took Tenley to her first Tigers game. My employer takes us annually and we purchased an extra ticket so we could take her. It was partially chaos, however she had a blast and it was well worth it. She was excited to get pretzel snacks and some pop on...

Common Ground Music Festival 2015

When I first moved to the Lansing area in 2009 was the first I hear of the Common Ground music festival. There’s been an act every year that’s tempted me to want to go. Sheryl Crow in 2009, Alice Cooper in 2010, The Verve Pipe in 2011, The Wallflowers in...

What is Beautiful Pitiful?

When this random girl sent me a message on that consisted of only one word (“Hi”), I had no idea that responding would lead me where I am today!

Beautiful Pitiful is dedicated to documenting my family’s daily life starting in 2014 just before our son is born, through photo, video and word. It is meant first and foremost for me to have something to look back on as I age to remember all of the good times. It is meant secondly for anyone interested in our crazy lives. As the tag lines state throughout the site, photographs are the primary medium. Most will be accompanied by text explaining what went on.

Who are we? We are your typical midwestern family. We hate the snow but we will never leave because this is where our family is. This is where home is. We both work normal jobs. Alisha is a dental assistant and Tim is a Team Leader for a product support center. We also have a small photography business that we run on the side called CalvinKay Photography.

Alisha is an amazing mother. She has a huge heart and is always thinking about everyone other than herself. She has a blog of her own called Extraordinarily Ordinary Girl and also has her own Etsy shop, which she named after her love of our children called TKandDCWhimsies, where she sells items that she reconditions to look vintage. Tim also keeps busy (when he’s not at work, entertaining children, or doing his best to help out around the house) maintaining not only this blog but also the CalvinKay site and

We are happy you decided to stop by and would love to hear from you!

Family Cookbook

Gingerbread Banana Porter Cupcakes

I’ve really been into cooking with beer lately. It can add so much flavor to your dishes. You don’t have to worry about the alcohol because it burns away while you’re cooking leaving behind amazing flavor. I wanted to try to do something my family...

Backyard Fashion Show

Pink and Black Zebra Tunic

What can I say? Alisha knows how to pick out clothing that makes Tenley look like a baby model. Perhaps that’s just the father in me, but I truly believe she would have no problem being a little model. This outfit was purchased from Zulily. It’s a┬áPink...
Where does the name Beautiful Pitiful come from?

It comes from one of my all time favorite songs by The Verve Pipe called Photograph. When deciding on a name I wanted to play on photography somehow since that is the basis of this site. When I thought of the word photograph this song popped into my head. My favorite line from the song is, “if you want beautiful, pitiful, have me in a picture.” And so there you have it.

What do you shoot with?

Primarily I use a Sony a99, with Sigma lenses. My three go to lenses are their 50mm f1.4, 24-70mm f2.8, and 70-200mm f2.8. I also use a Sony a580 for backup as well. Additionally when on the go I shoot a lot of photos and video with my iPhone.

What software do you edit with?

I use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom primarily on an iMac for editing anything I shoot with my Sony cameras. I also use NIK (now google) plugins. On my iPhone I use NIK (now google) Snapseed for editing photos. For video I use Final Cut Pro X on my iMac.
